Lassi with Lavina New York Photo of the Day:

Times Square –   Selfies in the Springtime

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]h, TImes Square in the Spring – so much happening! A billboard had caught fire, a design festival was on, thousands of tourists, a newly married couple shooting special romantic pictures – so how could I resist?

Walking in Times Square, you suddenly realize something strange – everyone is taking selfies! What is it about this part of New York that makes you want to record your visit for posterity? It’s like the Taj Mahal –  you feel it looks so much more meaningful when you’re standing in front of it!

[dropcap]S[/dropcap]o walking down the surreal, traffic-less streets on a Saturday you’re struck by the selfie-hordes. Thousands of cell phones, thousands of images clicked. I even saw a couple straight from their wedding recording their union in the hurly-burly of Times Square!  The milling crowds could hardly be bothered to look at them as they shot their own selfies, tended to kids and shopped and shopped.

The Design Pavilion, now in its third year, was on in Times Square on Saturday with several design installations including a giant chair; a huge billboard had caught fire but no one was hurt and things had calmed down; and the unending ocean of people just kept coming and coming  – who can resist Times Square on a Saturday? Certainly not tourists! The Statue of Liberty, Muppet characters, Superheroes and bare breasted girls (with painted bikini tops) cajoled tourists to take photographs with them while just about everyone commemorated their  own Times Square visit with at least a selfie.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he skyscrapers and colorful billboards looked down at the human cavalcade covering every inch of Times Square. It was goodbye to coats and mittens and mufflers as the sun finally blazed. Spring had come to New York and there was no holding back the selfie and sun seekers!
