A Celebration of Indian Music with L.Subramaniam

Music lovers got a chance to dip into the vast ocean of music with the free Lincoln Center Out of Doors concerts and enjoy a fusion concert with noted violinist L. Subramaniam and his family.
Padma Bhushan L. Subramaniam has had his work performed by the New York Philharmonic and other orchestras. In this fusion concert he performed with his wife Bollywood playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthi Suramaniam; Ambi Subramaniam, his violin-prodigy son; jazz fusion guitarist Larry Coryell; and Corky Siegel, the blues-fusion harmonica player
I caught up with L. Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurthi enjoying a dosa break at a press conference at Chennai Garden and discovered the plans for that rocking evening.
As Krishnamurthi explained, since it was such a mixed diverse audience and at the Lincoln Center’s beautiful out of doors setting, the plans were to have a fusion concert with Indian and western touches, jazz and raga elements. “I’d like to do something different from what I would normally do in a Bollywood concert, ” she said. “I would want to sing a little more semi-classical, the essence of India. In this place I would like to experiment, do something that makes me think a bit more, one step ahead to what I’ve done in life, and which as a musician makes me happy. We are expecting an audience which is very broad-minded in its visions of music.”
The Subramaniams will be performing fusion numbers with their son Ambi and American performers Larry Coryell and Corky Siegel.
Fans of Subramaniam and Krishnamurthi will be happy to know a new album is to be released soon by Kavita Krishnamurthi of solo and duet songs with Pandit Jasraj, Sonu Nigam, Lucky Ali, Hariharan and others to the lyrics of Gulzar, Javed Aktar, Ravindra Jain with special compositions of L. Subramaniam.
The noted violinist will also be releasing for the first time a 10-CD album to commemorate the birth centenary of his late father Lakshminarayana and as part of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival. And yes, there’s more, a new fusion album by Subramaniam which is a tribute to 10 legendary jazz musicians.
