Varli Culinary Awards: Meet the Golden Goddess of Indian Cuisine

She’s a svelte and golden goddess with a cooking utensil in her hand and she’s coveted by all those in the world of cuisine.

We’re talking of course of the Varli Culinary Award, in the form of a lithe sculpture – and now the most talented chefs are going to be able to take her home as a testimony to their cooking talent.

On November 15, foodies, chefs and restaurateurs will gather for the first Varli Culinary Awards at the Altman Building in New York City to honor the best talents in Indian cuisine. The chief judge of the evening is renowned cooking authority Sanjeev Kapoor whose show ‘Khana Khazana’ is a huge hit on TV. The hosts for the evening are popular New York actors Manu Narayan and Pooja Kumar.

What’s a food event without food? Guests will get to sample treats from ten Indian restaurants as well as handmade desserts and other goodies. There will be food demonstrations, VIP guests and performances throughout the evening, as well as a silent auction of foodie must-haves which will benefit the non-profit organization Magic Bus.

“Guests will experience a classy and entertaining affair filled with celebrity personalities, delicious tastings, and of course drinks!” says Varli Singh, the innovative entrepreneur behind the Varli concept which includes the food festival, awards, cook-off, magazine, a website as well as a V-card for discounts at various Indian restaurants.

For all of us who miss our beloved Indian utensils, there’s good news. Varli Singh is introducing a new line of kitchenware called – you’ve guessed it – VarliWare. ” Our product line includes innovative forms of clay ovens, dosa grills, tawas, burner plates, copperware, rolling pins, sauce pans, cutlery, plates, and much more,” she says. “Leveraging years of experience at the forefront of the Indian culinary world, each product has been specially designed for the specific needs of restaurants. For home cooks, there’s VarliWare Domestic, a retail line of kitchenware.”

Well, the Varli enterprises seem to be multiplying faster than mushrooms in the rainy season! Says Varli Singh, “The promotion of Indian food is a passion with me 24 hours of the day. I’m always lost in thought about it and coming up with new ideas.”

Indeed, that’s the best part of entrepreneurship – the ability to take a shadowy improbable idea, a mere concept and run with it. Now you have scores of chefs, foodies and restaurants coming together under the Varli umbrella, bringing new tastes and adventures to the Indian food loving masses. And yes, there’s also a golden goddess with a cooking pot in her hands. Let the games begin!
