    Navratri News

In Jersey City, Cops Gotta Garba!

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]here’s a new dance in town and it could be called Cops Garba! The Gujaratis have brought the joys of raas and garba to their adopted land and now even the Men in Blue are getting hooked on to it! This short video, which has become popular on the Internet,  shows how dance and music (and probably Indian food) can bring the ones in authority and immigrant communities together – all shaking a leg to the sound of dhols!

As some pointed out on Twitter, the cops are doing macarena steps to the garba music – a mish-mash totally fun and acceptable in this global world, each community bringing their own comfort level in music and dance to the dance floor!

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen one thinks back to the 80’s, New Jersey had the Dotbusters, a hate group, and Indians were regarded so alien. There were just so many racist acts against Indians and South Asians in those days and often the police would be indifferent. Since then a lot of water has passed under that bridge and there are now many more laws against hate crimes.

it’s nice to see white and brown interacting and behaving like a family. When cops have shared dance and music with a minority community they are more likely to see them as individuals, as real people and part of America.

In all the constant bad news around us in the media, this is one video which brings a smile to the lips. So break a leg – in a friendly, joyful way!!
