Season of India Gala Celebrates a Landmark Exhibition

I had once read a very charming children’s picture book about how the 100 plus performers of the New York Philharmonic arrive from various destinations to play together in one gorgeous symphony. Today,  looking at the fabulously dressed diverse guests gathered at the Pierre Hotel for the Season of India Gala hosted by Asia Society, I couldn’t but get intrigued by an imaginary picture book of how these 300 plus guests all arrived from many different starting points – India, London, Canada and from all over the United States for this glittering celebratory start to the opening of the landmark exhibition   The Progressive Revolution: Modern Art for a New India, which shows the work of the Progressive Artists’ Group as never before seen. (The exhibition, along with many thought-provoking panels, can be seen from September 14, 2018 through January 20, 2019. It is co-curated by Dr. Zehra Jumabhoy and Boon Hui Tan, Director of Asia Society.)

But to get back to the Season of India Gala which was co-chaired by Sangita Jindal and Sana H. Sabbagh. The guest list had everyone in stunning India-inspired wear and jewels,  blending in as one large international family – from different cities and across continents. Well-known names from the worlds of business, art, scholarship and philanthropy had all come together to support the arts and celebrate the new exhibition of some of India’s most important art. Guests met at the cocktails at the Pierre like long lost friends though of course many had met several times in the week during Asia Art Week and the art auctions – but in New York, you can never have too much of art – and you can never have too much of glamour!

Guests from diverse worlds included – in no particular order – Duchess Lily of Marlborough, Princess Cécile zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Ajoy Mani, H.H. Prince Tikka Raja Shatrujit Singh of Kapurthala, Farida Khelfa, Dr. Zehra Jumabhoy, HRH, Prince Charles-Henri de Lobkowicz, Josette Sheeran, Charles and Sheryl Kaye, Boon Hui Tan, Asheet and Kirtna Mehta, Victor J. Menezes, Joan Hardy Clark, Sunil and Bianca Hirani, Oscar and Agnes Tang, Kiran Nadar, Danny Russel, Swati and Bharat Bhise, Deepanjana Klein, Vinita Jain, Harold Newman, Anu Ghosh-Mazumdar, Lal Dalamal, Nauman Piyarji, David Owsley, Dr. Vishakha N. Desai, Sundaram and Kelly Tagore, Sheila Karnani, Vikram Rajadhyaksha, Suhel Seth, Dinesh and Ila Paliwal, Carolyn Hsu-Balcer and René Balcer, Nitin Bhayana, Ayesha Bulchandani, Taimur Hassan, Dinesh and Minal Vazirani, Bibhu Mohapatra, Ravi Reddy, Anu Khosi, Hemendra Kothari, Ravi Trehan, Nishith Desai, Purnendu and Amita Chatterjee, and many more.

Yes, I would love to see a little illustrated picture book on how the 300 glamorous guests got to the gala from different continents and cities, got ready in their grand togs to create this symphony of celebration.  Bravo to them for supporting the arts and having great fun while doing it!
