Twitter Traumas: What If You Tweet and No One Listens?

Twitter and social media are hot trends but what if your tweeps get no tweeple? Ruchi Kalra asks on Lassi with Lavina.
What if you tweet and no one follows?

    Tweet..Tweet..Tweet…Anybody there?

So I am relatively new to this 140 characters world. Been there for a bit but just can’t figure out what to tweet about. Maybe it’s because the land of  Twitter is a little confusing, they even have a twittonary. I have been more of a Facebook person then a tweep. Though I have to agree, it’s not as invasive as Facebook as you are not really sending them a FRIEND request. In the Land of Twitter you can silently stalk someone and make believe that all these celebs are your friends by tweeting to them. I have met a lot of fashion bloggers who want to have nothing to do with FB but are attwicted (you guessed it…addicted to Twitter in Twitter lingo).

I don’t have too many followers on Twitter, and why would they  follow because in Tweetland I am boring and unreliable. And how do I know this…because when I do tweet, no one really hears me or should I say responds. It’s like I am standing in the middle of the street screaming and shouting but no one looks out of their window, unless I of course throw a rock at their window..oh I meant to say tweet to them directly.

nd social media are hot trends but what if your tweeps get no tweeple? Ruchi Kalra asks on Lassi with Lavina.
A tweeter's Nightmare - No way to tweet!

Twitter: Life in 140 characters – or less!

When I do find something fun to tweet about, I spend 5 minutes trying to get rid of the negative character count .. aaah … how frustrating!! Do you know how hard it is get interesting thoughts across in less than 140 characters? Imagine if Twitter existed in the Elizabethan era!  I think I need to enroll in a “Twitter Short Form Writing” class right after I get done with “What Do I Tweet About?”

So the other day I got a couple of email notifications on new follows…I was all excited to see who it was. Imagine my surprise when I saw the first one was the Golden Gate Bridge…hmm! Not sure why the longest suspension bridge in the world weighing 60,000 tons would be interested in me…Oh well!! Let’s move on to the next one. Fireman’s Brew out of LA!! I don’t live in LA and for that matter do I even drink beer? Maybe it’s a hint…

So I think you get the gist…I have to get a little more interesting in the land of Tweets or my next follow is gonna be the Burj Khalifa…any suggestions Tweeples before I become tweepless?

Looking forward to your tweets @rgkdzines

Very well written Ruchi. I am not a part of that big bird world, but I am sure it’s as much fun as Facebook is. Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this blog!

@pinky Thx so much!! A little far from mastering but it’s all about the journey I hear and not the destination…so will try to enjoy my novice days of twitter!

    8. Sean on June 9, 2011 2:53 pm

Interesting thoughts Ruchi. I got started by re-tweeting many of the tweets that were showing up in my feed. I guess it was a backdoor way for me to put content into my stream. And I found that the people I was re-tweeting wanted to follow my tweets. Confirmation that the world is indeed round, or some such thing.

    9. Pinky on June 9, 2011 2:50 pm

      Wow Ruch,
Impressive tweeting. It looks like you already have a great number of followers. I know it’s not easy to express thoughts but it looks like you’ve mastered the art!! Good luck in “Twitterworld”

    10. Nishant Gupta on June 9, 2011 1:16 pm

Ruchi maasi, u r absolutely spot on. Even I don’t use Twitter much coz its so difficult to express in 140 words…more then that, it doesn’t even have a like button so that you get to know if people liked your thought or not… 😛 😛

    11. Shilpa on June 9, 2011 9:56 am

Ruchi – totally enjoyed reading the article. I am completely clueless about Twitter so the article gave a quick insight to someone like me. Nice cartoons too! Keep up the good work!

    12. Miss G on June 9, 2011 9:14 am

Not only are you a great friend you are also funny…. Voila ! It’s a win win for me 🙂 . I am a desi and I can’t tweet. How’s that for confession! Lol .. Methinks you should give us commoners some lessons on tweeting ..maybe we can cohort and follow each other at least so we don’t look so loserly out there all alone. Look fwd to more soul baring and scandalous tweets girlfriend!

    13. Karen on June 9, 2011 1:56 am

      Hi Ruchi,
When I first got on Twitter, I was very confused. Didn’t know what hashtags were, how to reply, re-tweet…nothing. So here’s my 2 cents. Be patient!

You’ll figure it out and have your own way of communicating with Twitter. Don’t get frustrated if you think people aren’t reading your tweets; they are. Not everyone responds; this is true on FaceBook too. Follow people who interest you. You don’t have to follow people back if you don’t want to. I don’t. It’s my time and I’ll spend it how I want!

You will quickly figure out who’s just there promoting themselves (and there’s a lot of those.) Some people spend all friggin day tweeting and re-tweeting; their goal is to have thousands of followers telling them how ” influential ” they are. On the other hand, there are people that you will connect with all over the world; they’re out there and that’s what makes Twitter fun. As for what to tweet about, it’s like anything else, be yourself. Tweet about things that make you laugh, inspire you, make you mad..whatever. I think that’s how you make the best connections because someone relates to how you’re feeling.
Look how many responses you got to this tweet because you voiced your frustration.

And if all else fails ?
Tweet about the weather. It always cracks me up how many people respond to those kinds of tweets! Hahaha!
      xo – Karen

Interesting take Ruch! Keep em coming.
Twitter is confusing but intriguing at the same time. Maybe the power of twitter is not at the individual level but more at the macro/crowd level. Doesn’t really matter who you follow but how well connected they are .. and with re-tweeting .. hot topics get hotter and spread like wildfire. So you start to get a sense of what the world of twits are tweeting/re-tweeting about and get a sense for overall crowd sentiment .. which is something that is really cool.

    17. ruchi on June 9, 2011 12:25 am

@lavina…Thank you so much!! I really hope I get some real tribe going in the twitter world..I don’t want to start a following of monuments or service businesses! 🙂 I think one of the ways to be successful in the twitter world is to tweet all the time and that in-itself is quite a challenge. To be able to say something exciting every 30 minutes or every 3 minutes likes some tweeters is a skill I still have to master! I hope to get some real live Tweeples in the Twitter world! LOL

    18. ruchi on June 9, 2011 12:19 am

@ayon! Thank you so much for reading it and commenting! Are you much of a tweeter?

    19. ruchi on June 9, 2011 12:15 am

@Nitin bhai..Thank you so much for reading the article..Love your insight on the three moguls of the social media! You recently joined the FB world. Howz that going for you? Will I see you in the Twitter world?:)

    20. ruchi on June 9, 2011 12:13 am

@Deepa..Thank you so much for reading! You are so right-the more the constraints we have, the more we want to do something..that’s usually true for everything in life- isn’t it? . For Lent, I always give up something for 30 days and have been doing that since I started with a friend in college. Every year I used to spend all 30 days craving what I had given up and then one day I heard someone telling a group of people…”the whole purpose of giving up something is to train your mind to not focus on it, otherwise it defeats what you are trying to achieve”..So since then Lent has gotten so much easier and maybe by practice I may actually get better at saying what I have to say in 140 characters or less…Sorry my comment took a different turn..but a blog topic for another day..maybe! 🙂
Join the 140 character world and follow me! Hoping to see you in the twitter world Deepa!

    21. ruchi on June 9, 2011 12:05 am

@annu..Thx for reading! I really enjoyed writing it as I was being totally honest! It’s not easy accepting the fact that you are boring..who knows this article might just get me some real tweeples…

    22. ruchi on June 9, 2011 12:03 am

@samarth..Thx for the support…Don’t let my twitter trauma scare you…jump in and who knows I may just learn a thing or two from you! So get a twitter account and start the following process…:)

    23. Lavina Melwani on June 8, 2011 11:20 pm

Samarth, Annu, Deepa, Nitin and Ayon – welcome to Lassi with Lavina – look forward to your input. Ruchi seems to have captured what a lot of us feel about Twitter! Nitin, your comment about social media was very insightful.

    24. Lavina Melwani on June 8, 2011 11:14 pm

Ruchi great post – i think you’ve addressed a lot of the anxieties many of us have about Twitter – and done it in a fun way! You deserve to have more than the Golden Gate bridge to be following you, certainly more than @getwhiteteeth! May your follower tribe increase.

    25. Ayon on June 8, 2011 6:56 pm

Wow Ruchi! Witty, entertaining and precise! Kudos!
      Ayon

    26. Nitin on June 8, 2011 6:54 pm

Ruchi, I am not much of a Twitter user myself, but feel that your last blog and this are thought provoking and do effectively draw out the differences between Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter. WIth Linkedin you are forming a connection, with Facebook a relationship, and with Twitter a following. My guess it that to succeed in Twitter Land, one had to be active in other forums and then be considered as entertaining or an authority on a topic to get strangers to become followers. Keep up the good blogging — really love the very creative artwork.

    27. Deepa on June 8, 2011 4:49 pm

I enjoyed reading the post. I often wonder how to say what you have to say in 140 characters. It seems when the constraints are placed the more there is to say. Made for a good read.

    28. Annu on June 8, 2011 4:46 pm

Ruchi – Loved the article…I can definitely relate since I don’t know anything about tweeting. Maybe you can tweet on tweeting for us non-twitters and we can also learn through you…through your experience. Enjoyed the article and the comics!!

    29. Samarth on June 8, 2011 4:23 pm

Reading your Twitter Trauma was so much fun. I actually being a FB guy, have never been on Twitter and have never had the courage to jump in a totally unknown world. It almost feels like what it felt when I was 8 and about to join a new school in a completely new city. If you get any success — I’ll follow 🙂

Very well written and expressed !!

    30. ruchi on June 8, 2011 4:04 pm

Thanks so much Lavina for posting my Twitter Trauma…Let’s see if anyone tweets back..I seriously need a twitter class..LOL!
