    An Evening with Sharmila Tagore

[dropcap]Y[/dropcap]ou’ve seen her, larger than life, on the big screen. Sometimes in black and white, in the powerful cinema of Satyajit Ray, in films like ‘Devi’, and Apur Sansar’. Sometimes in romantic shindigs like ‘Kashmir ki Kali’ and strong woman dramas like ‘Aradhana’. So it’s always a surprise to see a noted actress like Sharmila Tagore descend from the marquees to the regular haunts of humans.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]his past Sunday noted gallerist Sundaram Tagore, who is from the same illustrious Tagore family, had an informal cocktail party at the Library Hotel for Sharmila, who was visiting New York. The guests included Riva Ganguly Das, the Consul General of India, and artists, diplomats, business bigwigs, collectors and performing artists.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he renowned actress, her famous dimple very much in evidence, was all smiles and accessible to all. The Begum of Pataudi may be the mom of Bollywood hunk Saif Ali Khan and the mother-in-law of Kareena Kapoor but she holds her own with her great intelligence and diverse interests. Rather than cocktail banter, every conversation with her was an enriching one. Class act!
