A Lost Future at the Rubin Museum

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]f you’re a fan of Tagore, music, art, literature or education, the Rubin Museum of Art is the place to be on June 1 for a free public opening reception from 6 pm -10 pm. The evening launches the opening of A Lost Future: The Otolith Group (June 1–September 17, 2018) and will include the world premiere of O Horizon, the new film from The Otolith Group, as well as a Q&A with the artists, exhibition tour, film screenings, and music by DJ Ushka.

‘O Horizon’ focuses on Visva Bharati, an art school founded by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, and it has been researched, recorded and filmed over five years in West Bengal, India. Music and dance fans couldn’t ask for anything more, for the film evokes “the Tagorean imagination for the 21st century.”

According to the Rubin Museum, “O Horizon” is the creation of the Award-winning artist collective The Otolith Group and the focal point of the second rotation of “A Lost Future,” a three-part exhibition featuring art from an evocative range of mediums by Shezad Dawood, Matti Braun, as well as other photographs and films by The Otolith Group.

[dropcap]’ O[/dropcap] Horizon’ draws upon the modernist theories and practices of dance and song developed by Tagore as well as the experimental theories and practices of mural, sculpture, painting, and drawing developed by critical figures such as K.G. Subramanyan, Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose, and Ramkinkar Baij, whose work shaped the ethos of generations of Indian modernists. Featuring Santiniketan, Sriniketan, and surrounding areas of Birbhum, West Bengal, O Horizon draws together dance, song, music and recital, evoking the Tagorean imagination for the twenty-first century.

A selection of earlier films, including their “premake” of Ray’s unmade film ‘The Alien’, titled Otolith III (2009), will be screened in the Rubin Museum Theater on select dates.

    Dates to Remember:

June 1, 2018 – Free Public Reception of A Lost Future: The Otolith Group. The exhibition runs from June 1 to September 17.
While the first segment of A Lost Future featuring the artist Shezad Dawood ended on May 21, the third avatar featuring Matti Braun will be inaugurated on October 5 and will run through Jan 28 where the central gallery will be transformed into a lake: “It references the lotus pond in the first scene of Ray’s The Alien, in which a friendly, catalytic alien from another time and place lands in a village. It also draws inspiration from the first scene in Steven Spielberg’s E.T., which may have been directly influenced by Ray’s script.”
And that is the sheer delight of the Rubin Museum where Lost Horizon captures vistas of past, present and future.
Don’t miss the other great exhibitions which include
The Second Buddha, Sacred Space, and Chitra Ganesh

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hile at the Rubin, you may also get happy at the Himalayan happy hour on Wednesdays at Club Serai with tea or wine and savories or visit the club’s new avatar K-Lounge on Fridays for a Pan Asian meal and music from the DJ. All in all, a happening place to jot down on your calendar.
