48 Women Photojournalists Chronicle the World

The Newswomen’s Club of NY Photography Show & Auction

They come from many countries, many cities and each woman’s unique eye behind the lens of the camera has captured many untold stories about people everywhere – stories of change, turmoil and devastation, stories of new beginnings and hope.

The work of these 48 women photojournalists was brought together on June 9, 2022, in the Spring Photography Show and Auction organized at 15 Hudson Yards by The Newswomen’s Club of New York, which was established way back in 1922 to support women in the business of news.  Since its first meeting at the Biltmore Hotel 96 years ago and over the following years its mandate has continued  to be to support and highlight the work of women journalists in the New York metropolitan area.

All these photographers donated prints of their work and the proceeds benefitted programs to support programs for women journalists. It has been a labor of love by the volunteer 12 member Photography Show and Auction Committee headed by Chairwoman Chelsea Matiash and Club President Jennifer H. Cunningham.

“This year, our club will celebrate a century of service and advocacy for women in the newsroom. So we thought it fitting that as part of that celebration, that tonight’s event featured work from female and non-binary photojournalists,” said Cunningham, who is also the editor-in-chief of the news at Insider. “Conceptualizing and executing an event like this is a grand effort and I wanted to especially thank our committee of volunteer working news women for their service and advocacy to our club.”

The powerful work of these photographers tell strong stories of our changing world. The talent includes photographers and photojournalists, Pulitzer Prize winners as well as those who have covered conflict.  Many of them are freelancers while others are staff at publications like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Detroit Free Press and The Christian Science Monitor.
