It’s a day and night difference.

During the day, it’s a kid-centric universe in the playground with children sprouting everywhere – delighted screams and squeals, flying sky-high on the swings, sliding down the chutes at break-neck speed. Kids streaming into the park with parents, care-givers and dogs. Kids gathering in the sandpits with sandpail strategies as if they are taking over the world. Kids running, jumping and chasing each other. Kids on scooters, kids cycling madly, kids huddling arm in arm. Whoops of joy from the playing field as the ball flies from player to player.  The endless traffic on the sourrounding Manhattan streets add to the cacophony of frenzied sound with the wail of an ambulance somewhere.

Then it’s nightfall and the sounds disappear. One by one, the children disappear. like vanishing gremlins.

Where have all the children gone?

Kind of eerie to walk in a silent, deserted playground late evening after the kids have gone home – the swings are still, the night lights have come on, the little elephant which spouts water is forlorn.

Yet there is a strange beauty in the sounds of silence. Come morning and the spell will be broken.

Children and the joy of the future will return.
