Sarees Go Global in Times Square

    Surrender to the Saree!
Sarees are Taking Over Times Square!

That iconic Indian apparel is taking over Times Square. On May 4, if you venture into that New York hotspot you will see not one, not two but 500 women dressed in sarees, celebrating its longevity and grace.
The event is Saree Goes Global and it will be celebrated with music and dance. This is the brainchild of British Women in Sarees and Uma Global with lots of support from groups across the tristate area. After all, who doesn’t love sarees?
In fact, the saree has been highlighted at several events such as the Royal Ascot Ladies’ Day, the historic Saree Walkathon at Trafalgar Square in London, Venice Masquerade Festival, the Tulip Gardens of Holland, and Hot air balloons in Turkey.

And now it’s the Saree Walkathon in Times Square! Over 500 participants from at least nine different saree-wearing countries have already signed up to attend. This promises to be an highlight cultural diversity, community, and craftsmanship and supports artisans in rural India. Every saree you wear is a support of the handloom industry and artisans in rural India.
So put on a saree and join the celebration!
What’s next for Times Square? Will it be the much-loved salwar kameez or perhaps every woman’s dream – the wedding lengha?
