[dropcap]S[/dropcap]he was a feminist long before we had heard of the term. Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi is a name most Indians have grown up with, a larger than life legend of bravery and inspiration who took on the mighty British East India Company.

Now a New York mother and daughter team – Director, producer and writer Swati Bhise and actor Devika Bhise – have brought this powerful historic tale to cinema and to global audiences.

‘The Warrior Queen of Jhansi’ had its world premiere in New York at Metrograph on November 13 hosted by The Wing and attended by both Swati and Devika, along with actors Jodhi May, Ben Lamb and Ajinkya Deodhar.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he packed screening was followed by a Q and A with Caroline Modarressy- Tehrani,  an Emmy-nominated correspondent, producer and writer.

The evening was a celebration of the valor and passion of the firebrand freedom fighter Rani Lakshmibai who sacrificed everything for her nation.

The “Spirit of The Rani” award was presented to activist and civil rights attorney Monica Ramirez for her  work in the eradication of gender-based violence and the promotion of gender equity and Yari Blanco for her incredible work in founding The Girl Mob and for her many diversity initiatives.
