Indian-American Moms Share Smart Ways to Enrich Their Kids This Long, Hot Summer

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]ierce Country Day Camp remains one of America’s first and oldest summer camps for more than a hundred years. Now currently owned by fourth generation Will and Courtney Pierce, they maintain the camp’s legacy and mission statement of placing ‘Children First’.

As the population in Long Island changes, there are more Indian families who are discovering the joys of camping for their kids. I recently got together with a few Indian moms to learn about their child’s experiences at Pierce Country Day Camp and how it has contributed to their child’s overall well-being.

    Social Development

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]onica Lund, a young working professional and mom to two kids in Long Island, juggles a lot of different roles and responsibilities both at home and the workplace. How does she do it all and find engaging options for her kids during the summer? She gleefully says, “It’s Pierce!” It is a hidden gem and a great resource for families. “My son Riyaan just turned 3 and attends Pierce Day School in the Toddler 2’s program. Riyaan and my older son Ishaan, who is 5 ½ years old, will both attend the summer camp at Pierce this summer,” she says. “I think kids benefit so much from camp. They learn to work independently, achieve team building skills through the various sports programs, and most importantly most kids are swimming proficiently and on their own by the end of camp due to Pierce’s extremely strong swim program,” Monica shares.

From her, I also got to know that the toddler program at Pierce Country Day School emphasizes on building kids’ confidence through choreographed performances. “Riyaan just had his spring show last month and the kids memorized and sang 10 songs on stage in front of an audience of fifty plus friends and parents. It was incredible. They will be doing the same at Pierce Camp this summer with various Pow Wows,” she informs.

    Physical Development

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hile sending kids to camp has many benefits, Monica feels the “biggest value is the opportunity to make them strong, safe swimmers in the swim program as well as the focus on building strong performers. My kids are a bit reserved in high attention settings, but Pierce Camp diffuses the pressure making the performances fun and engaging as opposed to stressful.”

Rohini Singh of Old Westbury has been a big believer in the power of camping. She has two kids, Rajveer, 9, and Arisa, 7, who have attended Pierce Camp and one who is about to attend his first year, Dev who is about to turn 3. “Camp has been a big part of our summers. It’s important because it’s a way for the kids to be outside and enjoy outdoor activities and not be in front of the TV or other electronics. It exposes kids to sports, arts and, swimming and other adventures all while being supervised by responsible young adults.”

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ccording to Rohini, “Pierce Camp offers a variety of outdoor and indoor activities which the kids really enjoy and love. My favorite thing is the Pow-Wow which is a dance performance show that the kids put on for all the parents and families. My kids’ favorite activities at the camp are Zip Lining and the Ninja Warrior Course.”

Rohini has also witnessed many great changes in her children after they attended Pierce Camp. “It has made them more outgoing and more social and helped develop their motor and physical skills,” she says. She personally wanted to highlight Pierce Camp’s excellent swimming program. Her kids learned how to swim there and are still continuing to improve their stamina and form every summer.

    Emotional and Mental Growth

Maya and Shiv Melwani are discovering the Pierce magic

[dropcap]F[/dropcap]or Bindya Melwani of Roslyn, summer camp holds great happy memories of her own childhood. She says, “My most special memories as a child are from my camp days and I would only want the same for my children. I sent my kids to summer camp for the camaraderie it creates. The community it forms brings our kids together to experience adventures away from home. It helps build confidence, independence, and long-lasting friendships.”

Her son, Shiv, age 5, attended his first summer in 2018 and now can’t wait for 2019 while Maya, age 2.5, will attend her first summer this year. Bindya says “Shiv left for camp saying he would not enter the pool and he came back with Olympic Rings. His friendliness and confidence have really shown through since his first summer at camp. He is a boy who can now play with just about anyone, and while reluctant about swimming at the beginning of the summer, he came back a little fish with lots of confidence in the water!”

Bindya mentioned that the longest lasting Pierce Camp benefit is that “I believe my kids will benefit from attending summer camp throughout their lives. The sense of being a part of a community, the confidence they gain, the skills they learn will forever be used throughout their lives.”

State of the Art Facilities and Experienced Faculty & Staff

[dropcap]M[/dropcap]aneesha Baharani, from New York and St.Maarten, wants her children to spend time at Pierce Camp whenever possible. “I sent Arhan and Amir to Pierce Camp because I fell in love with the camp grounds and super friendly staff. It’s like a children’s wonderland filled with fun, top quality facilities and highly trained staff,” she said.

Monica also talked about the highly experienced staff. She said, “Loving instructors are one of the biggest reasons I will continue to send my kids to camp there. Riyaan’s teacher Miss Kim oversees the entire camp program too. As a working mom, it brings me great joy to know that my kids are in great hands when they go to Pierce. “I know the teachers/counselors will take care of my kids and look after my kids like their own and that they will be building ever-lasting friendships.”

After speaking with the parents, one can conclude that Pierce Country Day Camp is a happy paradise to grow strong kids, physically, emotionally and socially.
