Salman Khan and Asin in Mumbai, reporters in Manhattan

If you can’t go to Salman Khan, Salman Khan is coming to you – by video conferencing! A press conference hosted by Studio 18 with the stars of the new movie ‘London Dreams’ linked New York and Mumbai with face to face interaction with Salman and Asin, the stars of the new blockbuster from director Vipul Shah. Ajay Devgan, the third angle of the eternal triangle, couldn’t be there due to a missed flight.

It was quite a strange experience sitting in a room in Manhattan with several journalists and yet face-to-face with Salman and gang. Salman was blasé and witty as ever, pulling co-star Asin’s leg and hamming it up.

So now, we find, video conferencing isn’t just for big business and politicians – Bollywood wants a piece of the action too. You can watch the whole interview with reporters from several media outlets. When I introduced Lassi with Lavina, Salman didn’t quite get the name. He asked Asin who repeated the name. Then the light bulb went on and he gave a hearty laugh.

Salman and Asin, along with Vipul Shah and co-stars Rannvijay Singh and Aditya Roy Kapoor, were in their element, relaxed and jokey, answering reporters’ questions as if they were all in the same room, be it Mumbai or Manhattan.

In a way, cinema has always been a one-way street, with fans aware of the stars almost as intimately as if they were blood relatives, and the stars of course, oblivious of the chattering masses, not knowing who were the millions who watched them. So it was quite odd, knowing that the stars could see you too, and it was all very real, connected and 21st century.

So what’s next? One-on-one star darshans for fans willing to pay the price, perhaps filmi command performances? We’re in the hi-tech age now and there’s no going back.
